Protection

Mangrove Species: Mangrove ecosystems
Local level: Different areas within mainland coast and cayes – north and southern Belize, Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker, South Water Caye Marine Reserve supporting partners in advocacy/outreach efforts at local level for on the ground protection for mangrove (e.g., SEA, SACD, Hol Chan, TIDE, etc.)
National level: WWF was part of the task force that revised the mangrove regulations, enacted in June 2018.
Undertook science and research to help inform target setting for mangrove protection and restoration via Belize’s Updated NDC.
Supported mangrove blue carbon assessment to increase the knowledge the carbon stock stored within Belize’s mangroves so information could be made available to help inform management and protection
Input into policy and advocacy
Land Tenure: Carried out land tenure and ecosystem service analyses to help inform mangrove protection within the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System World Heritage Site (7 marine protected areas)

Location: Supporting partners in advocacy/outreach efforts at local level for on the ground protection of mangrove (Placencia Peninsula and Lagoon, Caye Caulker, Ambergris Caye, northern mainland coast (west of Ambergris Caye), southern regional planning zones), support for the on the ground management of the Gra Gra Lagoon National Park, etc.
National: Framework for designation of private mangrove protected areas, Advocacy towards community engagement and formation of established community-based organizations responsible for mangrove protection and restoration (e.g., Hopkins Nature Reserve).
Land Tenure: National coastal-marine, including 10km areas of interest and CZM coastal planning zones.

Restoration Site: Supported restoration efforts on along the Placencia Peninsula and Lagoon
Supported FOCUS with restoration work at Mangrove Park, Corozal Town
