BAS is the longest standing conservation NGO in Belize charged with co-managing seven of Belize’s most biologically and topographically diverse protected areas. BAS helped establish Belize’s first protected area at Half Moon Caye, and now manages these protected areas in partnership with the Government of Belize.

Mangrove Species: Mangrove ecosystems
Target Audience: Students of Chunox, Copper Bank and Sarteneja – stakeholders of Lighthouse Reef Atoll
Mechanisms: Mangrove awareness integrated into the Reef Protectors Programme targeting 3rd and 4th form high school students (2012 – ongoing). School visits
Reach: Reef Protectors: 45 students. School visits: 300 students

Research

Mangrove Species: Red white and black mangroves
Location: Lighthouse Reef Atoll
Research Topic: BAS has recently added mangroves to the conservation targets monitored at Lighthouse Reef Atoll as part of the Research and Monitoring Plan for Half Moon Caye and Blue Hole Natural Monuments. Remote sensing will be used to develop baseline mapping of mangrove extent on the Atoll
